NSO messed up this year

I have come to know that NSO exam conducted by SOF on 19 Nov was totally messed up. I can quote incidents where this exam's crediblity is at stake. Jaipur was closed on this day because of the swine flu, however this examination was conducted at few locations in Jaipur and in the rest of the India. when the school opened up few schools conducted this exam on 23 nov and the same exam paper was administerd to the students and at few location the exam was conducted on 24 Nov too. Looking at this it is understood the SOF Mgmt doesn't have any stand by arrangements to keep the sanctity of such a National Level Examination.
It seems it has become more a money making business with out any seriousness attached. gonig by this way it makes more sense to appear for Govt based exams who are ot very strong in marketing but the crebility is very high such as NTSE, Olympiads condcuted by HBCSE

Reforming Primary Education

Reforming Primary Education

This topic is widely discussed in intellectual circle where the importance of primary education has been emphasized again and again and we have seen that the policy makers are not leaving any stone unturned to increase the head count. Government is spending millions to make sure that Govt School have a decent turn up of the students. Whether the efforts have yielded desired results is a debatable issue.

As per some data available to me we are spending 6% of the GDP on primary health care and yet 35 million children drop out from schools every year. Our mid day meal schemes are attracting lot of students who earlier never had an opportunity to access the education. But the standard of the education in Govt. school is deteriorating day by day and this is alarming. Govt schools are very resource full from the physical infrastructure side but very inefficient when it come to execution and innovation. Resources which are used to run the schools are going in drain with out producing the desired results; our policy makers are responsible for such dire strait.

If we remove the incentives schemes (Mid day meals, free education and scholarship and free books) from the Govt. Schools, I am afraid that these schools will have any students left over. It’s more of a compulsion now for policy makers to continue with such freebies, absence of which will collapse the entire Govt. Primary education system in India. Schools have become am epitome of mismanagement.

Any sensible person whatever little he earns if he has an access to Pvt Education he will never his children in Govt schools. Some of you might say that we too have studied in Govt schools and they are not that bad, but we need to look in to things with today’s perspective, today we can’t even think of putting our children in govt schools. Even the bottom part of the pyramid who will be earning as less than as Rs 5000 a month will try to send his children to Pvt schools and will be paying Rs 1000 a month towards the fee.

This all is happening despite putting up the best faculty and paying them the best salaries and perks. We have got the excellent infrastructure with the Govt schools in India and yet the Govt schools produce the worst results. We can leave the JNV and KVs up to some extent out of discussions.

Govt Schools are producing the illiterate citizens who can barely read and write, and with the fraction of the resources, if utilized properly we can do wonders.

There are lots of things which our policy makers can do

1. Public Private Partnership: This has been discussed thoroughly already at various forums and as economics says, let the best survive, so PPP model should be encouraged.
2. Coupon System: Close the govt schools and use the spare resources to subsidize the education in pvt sector.
3. Top down Approach: Here comes my favorite approach, this is surely going to do wonders and if we can implement this even the best of the schools like Doon , Mayo will find it difficult to get the students.

We just need to make it compulsory for majority stake holders (in the govt and education system) that they send their kids to Govt schools only. This means that ministers, top bureaucrats and people working in education sector (Principals, teachers or other officers) will now have to send their kids to govt schools only. Our leaders show austerity by traveling in the cattle class and troubling the Aam Admi, now it is time to send Gandi family kids to Govt School not to the Doon school. People in govt who decides the policy they should test it too, how painful is their execution, the same thing should apply to primary and secondary health care too.

power of RTI

I have been using RTI for obtaining the information from NCERT regarding the NTSE , and i am very happy that NCERT has taken a learning from it, by declaring the marks of the selected and non selected students in the public domain.
However there are still lot of things which NCERT needs to do
1. NCERT should give the papers to students
2. NCERT should ask the states conducting stage 1 examination to do the same

Many Takers for IIT-R except Rajasthan

Times of India : 07-08-09 : As the Rajasthan Government has not been able to decide the final Location for IIT-Rajasthan. Many new states have shown their interest in establishing IIT-R in their states. In a meeting held in Delhi in the last month (July 2009) where the representatives of all new IITs were present except IIT-R. Representatives from Karnataka showed their interest in establishing IIT in their state despite that Karnataka has already got the nod from Ministry of HR for IIT-Bangalore, Similarly representative from Chhattisgarh also showed their keen interest. When representatives of Rajasthan Government were approached who were not present in the meeting, they told that the issue of IIT-R is one of the main concern of Rajasthan Govt. but it is being delayed due to other unwanted isuues like Gurjar Andolan & others. Now these issue are over, the final location will be decided soon & information will be sent to Ministry of HR shortly.

Prestigious Exam like Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Lacks Transparency

Prestigious Exam like Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Lacks Transparency

The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" is an ongoing program started by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research. However the awarding of the fellowship is kept closely guarded secret by the authorities here. Being a KVPY Scholar is considered to be great achievement for a student but it seems the system is not at all transparent. The students are not given papers and nor told about the marks they have scored in the examination.

This leads to lot of questions and doubts raised in the manner this prestigious scholarship is awarded to students. While other examinations like AIEEE, IIT-JEE and CAT going for more transparency by giving out the papers and giving out the score card to students but it seems that the KVPY is not willing to learn any thing.

Supreme Court and Central Information Commission (CIC) have recently asked for more transparency in the system by divulging the details to students. RTI act is also instrumental towards improving the transparency, however the authorities at KVPY are least concerned about RTI and they are not ready to give the information sought under RTI act. It has been more than six months I have been seeking the information with IISc Bangalore, organization responsible for conduction of this examination with no results.

I have been denied information on filmsy grounds such as policy matter of the governing body.

MBA colleges don't follow ethics themselves

Some of the reputed colleges known for grooming the leaders are doing the plani cheating with the students. Symbiosis is a example how it's is cheating the students and violating the AICTE rules with out any compunction. Below please find the mail which i have recevied from a concenred parent

3:58 PMSubject: SCMHRD return of fee paid.
Dear Sir, My son Rohit Bharath Das joined SCMHRD for MBA paying a fee of
Rs.1.75 lakhs. Some email correspondance occured between the college and he and
certain assignments were given to him during May 2008. He joined the college on
June 1st and stayed up to June 5th. He withdrew his admission from the college
and left the college on June 5th. An application reimburse the money paid was
not responded. So many calls and emails were send and finally they reimbursed
Rs.5,000/- the caution fee paid saying it as first installment. So many times
they were approached to reimburse the fee paid as per the policy published in
the web. According to the web they are bound to reimburse the whole fee minus
Rs.1000/- towards their administrative charges. A registered letter was sent to
them last week, for which they have responded that they are not bound by the
agreement to reimburse as per the agreement. We parents have no other way
option but to sign the printed formats. More over they have said the cases is
in jurisdiction of Pune court. They have already admitted another student in
his space and Mr. Mohit is occupuying his bed. No doubt, these institution is
cheating. Why should one pay in advance charges for food for which he has not
used, for books which is not recieved, software user charges for which not
used? Kindly advise me the course of action. I shall be willing to book such
crooks to justice. The principal is a colonel, not worthy of the post.

Indian railways: Pathetic State

To,
DRM
Ahmedabad Divison
Western Railway

Sir,

I would like to give my comments on the functioning of the Ahmedabad railway station.

1. As soon as the person stands in front of the ticket counter he/she is approached by pimp (middle man) who is ready to provide berth in any class in any train of course on some premium. I wonder why do we need to have railway police or ticket counter.
2. Asking complain book is considered sin at this railway station (though the situation is not very good at other railway stations of India also). Passenger is harassed so much that he finally gives up the idea of writing complains. It really requires heroic efforts from the individuals.
3. Various vendors at railway station decide the rates by themselves, when asked for complain book one will be seen as animal from different planet.
4. Now finally some how if you have managed to get in to train, you will be welcomed by
eunuchs
, who can even slap you if you don’t pay them the money.
5. If some body is having a waiting, soon after he gets his/her latest waiting status from TTE, he/ she is approached by Pimp who offers a confirmed berth again for some premium. This clearly indicates a strong nexus between railway staff and pimps.

All this happens before the train departs from this station. I have not lost my faith in the system though most of the people have. I will request you to take actions to stop these this kind of incidents. Please don’t reply with thank you note stating that my complain will be looked in to.

Thanks

B Schools are great. They fool the country's greatest minds

Priyank Bhardwaj was very happy when he received a call from Symbiosis (SCMHRD) in the month of Feb 05 and was told to deposit one lakh ten thousand rupees immediately. Prodigious as the sum was, completing management degree from a reputed college had been his dream and he was fascinated with the sheer opportunity at hand. He had worked for three years & saved for this day, and happily went on to deposited the money. But little did he know that was destined for some thing very big; for in the month of April he received an admission call from IIM Ahmedabad. His joy knew no bounds; he was going to study in the most sought after business school of Asia Pacific. He immediately wrote to SCHMRD about his selection in IIMA and the desire to withdraw his candidature from SCHMRD. SCHMRD paid him a mere ten thousand in the name of refund against the one lakh ten thousand that he had deposited. The important thing to note here is that the academic session of SCHMRD was to start only in the month of June.

This is not the story of only Priyank. Hundreds of students like Priyank every year get caught in the same act, carefully planned by a few management institutes to take advantage of the hapless students. The modus operandi of various institutes such as Symbiosis, is to finalize their admission procedure well before February end or the beginning of March. By finalizing the admission early, these institutes leave the students no other option but to deposit the hefty fees (to the tune of one lakh) in March itself. Since the results of various top B- schools (the IIMs, XLRI) are not out by this time, students generally don’t take a chance and deposit the fee in these institutes without delay. To make the plan foolproof, these institutes take an undertaking from the students that if they withdraw the admission, the amount deposited by them will be forfeited. By the time the results of the Top B schools are out, hundreds of students would have already deposited the fee for these institutes. If some students get admission in a college of their dream, like the IIMs and wish to withdraw their admission, they get a meager sum compared to what they had deposited. The institute themselves lose out on nothing, as the seats vacated by students who move out are immediately filled by others in the wait list. But the plight of the students who leave does not stop here. Now they have to arrange the fees for admission to these top B schools. Note here that academic session in all B schools starts around the month of July. Where is the logic of demanding admission fees so early then? To a rational mind, this seems to be a well knit plan by these institutes to exploit the precarious situation. Assuming that on an average, 50 people withdraw their admission, the institute pockets about half a crore rupees every year at the expense of these students. Belonging to a responsible society, should we allow this malpractice to continue?

I am going to bring a lawsuit against these institutes for carrying out such mal practices and seek your cooperation to forward this mail to all the students who wish to take admission in such management institutions. I also request those students who had deposited money with above-mentioned institutes in last four years or so to contact us. We will try our best to ensure that justice is meted out.

This mail gains added relevance as the time is about to come when the same cycle of tomfoolery is about to repeat with the new admissions commencing in a short while.

Thanks
With Regards
